6 new bikes for VSLA trainers in Uganda

9 May 2009

On their bikes...

The Iganga District Savings and Loans (VSLA) Scheme is well under way, but it had one big snag: 6 trainers…6 sub counties…54 groups in total…1 trainer visiting 2 groups a day…each group on average ten miles apart… that’s a lot of walking! Our trainers were finding that a lot of the time they could have spent doing their jobs was actually spent on foot between one group and another.

Here in Guernsey, at our annual Liberation Day Celebrations on 9th May, we held a raffle where members of the public each donated £2 in the hope of winning a brand new Giant mountain bike. A bike to buy bikes, we thought it was logical! Amazingly, thanks to the public’s generosity and to a  £100 donation by the staff at Investec Bank (Channel Islands) Limited, we raised enough money to buy our staff 6 new bikes.

The winner of the Giant mountain bike was Chloe Le Tissier and we hope that she will find her new bike as useful as the Iganga trainers are.
